As a former fourth-round draft pick, Romond Stevenson has done enough to deserve an extension.
The running back thinks he'll receive an extension soon, telling reporters on Monday, and in more detail on NFL Network's Insider on Monday, that he's "very close" to a deal to stay in New England after 2024.
Stevenson got the vote of confidence he wanted from his new coach, Jarrod Mayo, and while Mayo stopped short of committing to giving Stevenson a new contract, he was full of praise for the running back on Monday.
"You know, we'll see. I'll say this about Romond," Mayo said Monday via a team transcript. "I think he's one of the better running backs in the league, there's no doubt about it. I think he's had some trouble getting started the last couple of years. So, I'm looking forward to what he can do this season. And, he deserves every bit of it. He's our starting running back, and hopefully we can get a deal done."
Stevenson gladly accepted the praise.
"It makes me feel good," he told NFL TV insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Nation senior columnist Judy Batista on "Insider." "Just knowing that I have the support of my head coach and all my teammates, and that I'm on board with this. It's something I've been working hard for, so to see it come to fruition is great."
One of those running backs includes Cleveland's Nick Chubb, who has excelled under the tutelage of new Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.
"Well, honestly, I watch all the running backs. The smaller guys, the bigger guys like me. So, honestly, I learn a little bit from everybody's game," Stevenson said when asked about studying Chubb's tape for reference. "Just seeing how the run plays -- outside zone -- Cleveland is an outside zone heavy team, and we're bringing that in right now. So, just getting familiar with how it looks, how it should be run, and the patience that goes into it. Yeah, Nick Chubb does a great job with that, so he's a great guy to watch."
If Stevenson breaks out in a similar fashion to Chubb, it would be in the Patriots' best interest to lock him up now at an affordable price, which also helps explain the timing of a potential extension. If Stevenson can pull that off, his coach's praise will be more than just praise -- it'll be accurate.
