Courtland Sutton's desire for a new contract won't turn into an official walkout as Denver begins mandatory minicamp next week.
In an interview with DNVR Sports on Thursday, the Broncos wide receiver said he will attend the event after missing the club's voluntary offseason program.
"I'll be there," Sutton said. "One little side note: Not doing OTAs (Organized Team Activities) has been tough on me. This has been the most different offseason I've ever had since I've been in the league. Anybody who knows me and has played with me knows that I love this sport. I love the game of ball. When I'm competing to prepare and play the game of football, I do the best I can."
Sutton's attendance is good news for the Broncos, who will enter a three-way quarterback competition this summer featuring Zach Wilson, Jarrett Steedman and first-round pick Bo Nix, a situation sparked by the offseason departure of Russell Wilson.
Adjusting to a new quarterback is no stranger to Sutton, who has gone through nine different starting quarterbacks in six seasons. Sutton has been a consistent force for the Broncos despite a revolving door of quarterbacks, hauling in at least 58 catches and 770 yards in each of the past three seasons.
Sutton caught a career-high 10 touchdowns (59 catches, 772 yards) in 2023, helping the team reach eight wins for the first time since 2016. With only $2 million guaranteed left on his current contract, Sutton is looking to lock in his future with the organization he loves after arriving as a second-round draft pick in 2018.
“Let’s put it politely, but the boys know the phrase: I’m willing to give up (high salary) so that we can get back to the playoffs, go compete for the Super Bowl, go out there and do what we know we can do for this organization and this city,” he said.
As Sean Payton enters his second season as the Broncos' head coach, there's still a lot of work to be done. Sutton's presence will help determine who will lead the Broncos into 2024, which can only help that process.
